Return to the Great Lakes

Land Of Lumber – Copper – Iron Ore

The earliest explorers in the 1600’s on Lake Superior were voyageurs and Jesuits. Their reports of copper led to an influx of prospectors and settlers. However, it was the immense lumber industry in the late 1800’s that brought prosperity to the Great Lakes area. This prosperity continues with the increasing demand for iron ore throughout the world.

For 32 years beginning in 1922 the  Ford Motor Company operated a sawmill complex on Lake Superior which produced lumber for Ford’s wood-paneled cars, known as “Woodies”.

Although all three industries are still evident, much of the economy is now
dependent upon sportsmen and vacationers like us.

UP - Land of Lakes and Waterfalls

In 1957 the Mackinac Bridge, one of the world’s longest suspension bridges, connects rugged Upper Peninsula (UP) with Lower Michigan across the Straits of Mackinac, where Lakes Michigan and Huron meet.

The Games People Play

As we have traveled across the USA we have met several groups playing Mexican Train Dominoes. What amazes us is the variation in the rules of their play. There seem to be as many variations of the rules as there are players. However, we are not convinced to change any of the rules by which we play.

Time now to answer the question:

Why is the Upper Peninsula, which is described as “a barren wasteland”, now part of the state of Michigan? Hint: At the same time Toledo became an Ohio city.
