The White Mountains
in New Hampshire

One of our favorite hikes in the White Mountains is to Zealand Falls and the Zealand Falls Hut, both for day hikes and overnight stays with friends. Although the sign stated that there was service during midday, including their very tasty brownies, the hut was not open when we arrived. Very disappointing.

The New York Adirondacks
As we drove along the island in Lake Champlain, we were impressed by the extensive corn fields and large dairy farms - a very prosperous farming area.

Leaving the Northway we were attracted by an advertisement for a store, only ½ mile detour, that offered 575 beer choices. This combined deli and beer store is operated by George “Speedy” Arnold, a local beer connoisseur and, to our surprise, illustrator. His current artistic project is a sketch book of outside and inside views of breweries in the greater Adirondack area. He expects to publish the first edition of this guide when the current pandemic subsides.

Cobble Hill

Cobble Hill is near the shore of Mirror Lake in Lake Placid. From the summit we had excellent views over the village. The trail was 0.8 miles, one way, via a steep route over rough footing, including a short rope assist across a rock slab. Fortunately there was a 1.6 mile easier descent through the forest.

 Tupper Lake

Across from the Tupper Lake lakeside park is a huge abandoned structure which until 1964 was the Oval Wood Dish (OWD) manufacturing plant. Read this article about the plant to discover a cherished childhood memory.

Fulton Chains Lakes
The Fulton Chain of Lakes is a string of eight very popular lakes ( 1st, 2nd, 3rd,   … 8th Lake) located in the Adirondack Park.. The chain begins near Old Forge and ends before it reaches Raquette Lake . The lakes are named for Robert Fulton, inventor of the steamboat, who proposed connecting the lakes to create an Adirondack canal. Several of the lakes are connected by narrow passages but a few require portage in order to travel the full length of the chain.

Nostalgia Visit to Morris, NY

In the late 1950s the “4 J” Walkers, my Aunt Jennie, Uncle Jim and cousins Jim and Jean moved to Morris, NY to operate a restaurant / soda fountain on Main Street. During this time my family visited several times and enjoyed the shops offerings, especially the soda fountain.

Morris Library

For the History Buffs
This small village in New York was settled in the 1770s and later named after General Jacob Morris the son of a signer of the Declaration of Independence who was granted land due to the property he lost during the revolution. The central school is named for Lewis Rutherford Morris, a descendent of the original founders of the town, a physician and a philanthropist who in the 1930s paid half the original cost of the school.

Home at Last
We spent the last day of this trip at the River House in Deposit, NY with Dick and  Nancy Canfield including,  of course a visit to the Penguin for ice cream.
